F/Sgt M.J. Smithson was in 215 Squadron in the UK and tried to ferry to India in spring 1942, but ditched off Portugal, returned to the UK, and then ferried out again in early Spring 1943 to serve with 70 Squadron.

His first four ops and crews were:- 

13/01/43 F/Sgt M.J.Smithson 1187084 and crew overshot on landing at Penhros, UK in Wellington DF682, a/c swung, u/c collapsed

              posted to 70Sqn ME, probably ferrying a Wellington out to the Middle East
